Dear FilmEU Community,


In a scorching heatwave in Brussels, we gathered two weeks ago for our annual FilmEU Summit. In the evenings, we sought cooler temperatures at the second edition of the FilmEU Film Festival (FFF). Together, these events marked the close of an eventful academic year across the FilmEU Alliance and offered the perfect opportunity to reflect on everything we have achieved together. 


With this newsletter, we'd also like to look back at some of the highlights from the past months across our alliance:

   

FilmEU Summit & 

Film Festival 2026!

Hosted by LUCA School of Arts in Brussels, the FilmEU Summit focused during the last week of June on “Weaving the Arts into STEM.” The programme addressed how the arts can enrich STEM disciplines by strengthening creativity, critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches to education and research. Across keynote lectures, presentations, workshops and networking sessions, the event reaffirmed FilmEU’s commitment to shaping a more creative and connected European higher education landscape.

FFF Awards

During FFF 2026, 25 student films were screened over three evenings, showcasing the diversity and creativity of the FilmEU Alliance and its Ukrainian and Armenian partners. 

FilmEU Observatory launched

A new intellectual hub designed to capture, curate and advance the Alliance’s knowledge, policy engagement and critical reflection on the future of arts, film, media and higher education. 
   
   

Lusófona University has achieved another significant success!

Lusófona University has achieved another significant success under the Erasmus+ 2026 programme, with six projects approved out of twelve proposals submitted. 

The results include three Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM)—two renewals of existing programmes previously funded by the European Commission and one brand-new joint master's programme—as well as three Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (EMDM) supporting the development of future joint degrees.

Best Animation School award for RE:Anima


Our RE:Anima joint master’s programme was named Best Animation School at Animafest Zagreb 2026, recognising its overall educational excellence and artistic impact.
     

Lusófona University at the Portuguese Sophia Awards 


Lusófona University members were recognised at the Portuguese Film Academy Sophia Awards, with multiple wins including Best Film, Best Director and Best Series.
   
   

FilmEU at Cannes 2026


Student films from LUCA School of Arts and LMTA were selected for Cannes 2026 programmes. Notably, Class Photo by LMTA student Arnas Balčiūnas was chosen for La Semaine de la Critique, selected from over 2,400 submissions worldwide. And LUCA’s Arwen Aznag was nominated for La Cinef, the distinguished Cannes Film Festival competition for film students, for her animated film ‘Photograph of an insane woman, to show the condition of her hair’..
   
   

The collaboration between FilmEU and Sumy State University - from Ukrainian perspective


Our recent collaboration with Sumy State University is gaining more attention. Share Your Course with Students Across Europe

Join the FilmEU+ Undergraduate Academy Course Catalogue — an open invitation for teachers to contribute courses and reach new international audiences of undergraduate students. Please note this is exclusively to the aliance teachers. 

What is the Course Catalogue? 

A shared catalogue of courses offered by 8 European partner institutions in film, media arts, and transversal skills. It gives undergraduate students the opportunity to enroll in courses beyond their home university — and gives you the chance to teach them.
