Manuel José Damásio and Barry Dignam elected to top positions at CILECT

Manuel José Damásio, Head of the Film and Media Department at Lusófona University, and Barry Dignam, Vice Dean European University at the IADT - both members of the FilmEU board, were recently elected to top positions at CILECT, the International Association of Cinema and Media Schools. At the association’s annual conference, which took place at the Communication University of China (CUC), Beijing in October, Manuel José Damásio was elected to president of CILECT while Barry Dignam was elected to the executive council and to GEECT regional chair, the European chapter of CILECT.

   
   
   

FilmEU Annual Challenge, Sofia, November 4 – 8

Ideation Week for the FilmEU Annual Challenge took place at the beginning of November in Sofia, Bulgaria. Overall, 68 students from around the EU gathered to meet their tutors and be assigned to mixed teams. The theme for this year’s challenge is ‘Water’ with four institutions taking part: Lusófona University, LUCA School of Arts, LMTA, and NATFA.

   
   
   

FilmEU at the EAIE Conference and Exhibition in Toulouse

A FilmEU delegation attended the EAIE Annual Conference and Exhibition in Toulouse from September 17 to 20. 

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the event attracted thousands of higher education professionals, including university representatives, policymakers, and industry experts. FilmEU was one of the few European Universities Alliances present in the south of France, promoting our vision and collaborative impact.

   
   

FilmEU Erasmus Mundus Masters new beginnings

   

In September, the new FilmMemory Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters launched at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels, where students will spend their first semester before studying at FilmEU partner schools in Lisbon, Dublin, or Tallinn. FilmMemory trains specialists in creatively working with audiovisual heritage.

The Replay Erasmus Mundus Masters also began in Lisbon, where game design students will develop impactful gaming experiences before moving on to Genk and Helsinki. Established programs DocNomads, Kino Eyes, RE:Anima also kicked off again last month.

   
   

FilmEU students pick up several awards

Alumni Stella Carneiro (Kino Eyes) and Ary Zara (Lusófona) were selected for Cannes’ La Factory des Cineastes initiative, where they will co-direct a short film premiering at the 2025 Director’s Fortnight. 


At the 14th Dublin Animation Film Festival, Small Hours, directed by IADT grads Christian Spurling and Marta Sniezek, won Best Irish Student Short, with Audience Choice and Honourable Mention going to James Naughton’s Every Other Weekend.

In Switzerland, LMTA alumna Saulė Bliuvaitė won Locarno’s Golden Leopard for her debut feature, Toxic. Meanwhile, DocNomads students have been making the rounds at festivals in Italy, India, Sweden, and beyond, with Mantra Watsa winning in Mumbai.

   

First Experts on Air of the new academic year


The first FilmEU Experts on Air of the year took place on October 23, focusing on "AI in Fashion and Fashion Film" and hosted by VIA University College in Denmark, with a live online stream.  

   

Lusófona hosts the first CineClub of the year


On October 31, Lusofona University hosted the first CineClub of the academic year with a screening of Oceans. Director of Photography Philippe Ros joined for a special masterclass, sharing insights into the making of the film. 

   

FilmEU Industry Summit in Tallinn (Estonia)


The FilmEU community will converge on Tallinn, Estonia, from November 18 to 22 for the FilmEU Industry Conference. This event will feature workshops, work package meetings, keynote discussions, the FilmEU Annual and Imagination Challenges, and networking opportunities for academics, staff, and students. In partnership with the POFF Black Nights Film Festival, FilmEU will host special sessions for in-depth discussions on industry topics.
